Korea tax refund guide: instant refund under 1,000,000 won per purchase

Korea Tax Refund Guide: Instant Refund vs Airport Claim Explained

A Korea tax refund is open to most visitors staying under six months. You can take the tax off at the till, or claim it later at a downtown booth or the airport. For a purchase under ₩1,000,000, the instant refund at the till is the simpler pick.

Customs checks the goods on your way out for the later claim.

The rules below come from the Korea Customs Service and the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), plus Global Tax Free, a company that runs refund counters.

Instant refund or airport claim: which one fits your trip?

RouteHow it worksLimit
Instant refundTax is taken off the price at the register, in select stores that offer itUnder ₩1,000,000 per purchase, ₩5,000,000 per trip
Downtown boothPay full price, then bring goods, receipt, passport and an international card to a booth in a city centre. Each booth handles only its own company’s receipts₩6,000,000 per receipt
Airport or port counterPay full price, get the customs stamp, then claim at a counter or kiosk. Airport and port counters accept every companyNo limit

KTO names Global Blue, Global Tax Free, Easy Tax Refund and CubeRefund among the refund companies. For a downtown booth, check that it belongs to the company on your receipt.

Go for the airport claim when one receipt reaches ₩1,000,000, or when your trip total passes ₩5,000,000. Stores without an instant refund also leave you with the claim route.

How does the instant refund work at the register?

Look for a Tax Refund or Tax Free sign on the shop window or the receipt. KTO says only select stores give the instant refund, so ask before you pay. Tell the cashier you want a tax refund and hand over your passport. The shop scans it to confirm you qualify.

You then pay the price with the tax already taken off. Global Tax Free lists a third step. When you leave, show the goods, the refund form and your passport to customs for export validation.

Keep the form with your passport until customs has seen it.

What happens at the airport on the way out?

If you took the instant refund, you have nothing to claim at a refund counter. Global Tax Free still asks you to show the goods and form to customs when you leave. For a claim, the order matters, because customs has to see the goods before your bag goes. KTO describes four steps for airports and ports.

Korea tax refund at the airport in four steps: check in, customs stamp, drop bag, claim refund

Check in and take your boarding pass, but keep the bag with you. Show the goods and receipts to a customs officer and get the Customs Export Approval stamp. Then drop your luggage at the oversized baggage counter in the check-in area.

Last, take your passport and receipts to a refund counter or kiosk. Cash is paid in the duty-free zone after security.

Both Incheon terminals have refund counters on the third floor. Global Tax Free lists the kiosks there as open 24 hours. KTO and Global Tax Free list different gate numbers and desk hours, so follow the airport signs.

If the counter is closed, KTO says to write the recipient’s details on the receipt. Then drop it in the designated box. A processed claim goes back to your international card, Alipay or WeChat Pay within one to two months.

Leave extra time before your gate closes.

How much tax is inside the price?

Korean prices include 10% VAT, so the tax inside a price is one eleventh of it. That covers the VAT only, and it is not a promised payout. Some goods also carry individual consumption tax, which is refundable too.

Price on the receiptVAT inside the priceIn USD / SGD / AUD
₩33,000₩3,000$2.25 / S$2.87 / A$3.20
₩110,000₩10,000$7.49 / S$9.57 / A$10.66
₩550,000₩50,000$37.45 / S$47.87 / A$53.30

Converted at about ₩1,335 per US dollar (Frankfurter, October 30, 2026). Singapore and Australian dollars use the same day’s rates.

I couldn’t find an official table of what the refund companies pay out, so trust the amount on your receipt over these figures.

What to look for at Olive Young and other stores

Department stores and large supermarkets were the first to offer the instant refund. KTO says it now reaches smaller shops and select convenience stores.

KTO lists Olive Young Gangnam Town (올리브영 강남 타운) as a Tax Refund Shop, with both the instant refund and the claim route.

Use the Olive Young store finder to pick a branch, and ask at the till whether it gives the instant refund.

Small rules that trip people up

  • Keep the goods and receipts with you and don’t check the bag until customs has stamped them, because the officer has to see the goods.
  • Goods must be unopened and unused, so leave cosmetics sealed until you have cleared customs.
  • Cheongju, Muan, Yangyang and Daegu airports use a mailbox for the refund receipt, not a staffed counter, per Global Tax Free.

What I would do

For a skincare haul on one trip, I’d use the instant refund at the register. It skips the refund counter. I’d use a downtown booth only to get paid early; the catch is that each booth takes only its own company’s receipts and customs still checks the goods. I’d save the airport claim for anything above the instant limits.

The short version

You can get a Korea tax refund at the till in select stores, at a downtown booth, or at the airport after the customs stamp. The instant refund covers purchases under ₩1,000,000. Bring your passport and leave within three months.
